Weekly Faith and Health Scripture - Luke 13:10-13,16 - Jesus Can Heal Us From Anger

In this scripture, Luke tells us of a woman who had been crippled for 18 years. Satan had been keeping her in “bondage” and because of this, she had been unable to stand up straight. But Jesus freed her… He healed her.Bible Reading

Perhaps this woman had held on to deep resentment and bitterness towards someone for a long, long time. Satan could have been telling her over the years that she should not forgive someone that hurt her. He could have told her that she was fully justified to have this mindset.

Medicine shows that when a person carries deep anger inside, it can actually eat away at our body. For some people this poison, in the form of unhealthy chemicals and acids, can attack their digestive system. Problems with the GI system can prevail. For others it can attack their joints and cause major joint problems, even severe arthritis. I suspect that most people don’t make the connection between this unresolved, deep inner stress and their health problems. Often, in an attempt to alleviate the problem, some turn to taking medications or elect surgery to correct the condition.

The Bible tells us of another way, through forgiveness. It’s not surprising that Jesus tells us in Matthew 18:23 that we should forgive others not seven times, but seventy times seven. He knows that if we carry a spirit of bitterness for a period of time that we will be adversely affected, to include in our bodies.

Do you have a health condition, perhaps like the woman in this week’s scripture, that might be affected by harboring some deep negative emotion? Search your heart. Ask God to help you go deep. If you do become aware of something, prayerfully ask Jesus to take it from you and to replace that anger with His love.

Jesus is still in the healing business. It can take many forms. Sometimes, all we have to do is believe in His healing power, and cry out to Him in the most genuine way possible. Then he’ll heal your hurting spirit and your body.

Have a great week!

This is an excerpt from Joel Osteen’s book, Your Best Life Now that speaks to this week’s scripture with an example:

When I was growing up, we had a former Methodist Minister in our church. His hands were so crippled with arthritis, he could hardly use them. They looked as though thy had shriveled up and were deformed. He couldn’t open a car door. He couldn’t shake hands or anything like that. For as long as I’d known him, his hands had been that way.

But one day, he went to my Dad (the church minister) and showed him his hands - they were perfectly normal! He could move them like any of us, almost as though he had received a new set of hands.

My Dad was surprised, but so happy for him. He said, “Man, what in the world happened to you?” - “Well, it’s an Interesting story, the former minister said. “Several months ago, when you were talking about unforgiveness. You were speaking on how it keeps God’s power from operating in our lives, and how it Keeps our prayers from being answered. As I listened, I began to ask God to show me if I had any areas of unforgiveness and resentment in my life. And God began to deal with me. He brought to light several situations that had happened to me down through the years in which people had done me great wrong. I didn’t even know it, but I still had anger and resentment in my heart toward those people.

That’s the odd part - I didn’t realize I was carrying it around. But as soon as I saw it, I made a decision to forgive them and totally let it go. And then the most amazing thing began to happen. One by one, my fingers started straightening out. One week went by and this finger would get healed. The next week this finger. As I continued to search my heart and eliminate all that bitterness and resentment, God brought complete healing to me, and now look at my hands! I’m perfectly normal!”

It’s Springtime in North Carolina!!

It’s definitely spring in Charlotte, North Carolina. I spent much of today sitting out back writing an article on how God can help us manage our stress. back yardFortunately I didn’t feel much of any stress throughout the day as I was writing. :-) On the contrary, it was wonderful relaxing in the 80 degree sun-drenched day sitting under a big umbrella on my small patio.

I know it’s spring because of the flurry of activity in the air. Today was my first sighting of the year of a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. He came to the feeder no less than a dozen times throughout the day. And then there’s the chickadees family. I suspect that yesterday the babies hatched in their nest. All day yesterday and today I watched the parents fly to the nest( in a box meant for Eastern Bluebirds) with green worms in their beaks to feed the little ones. If it’s quiet out, I can hear the babies chirping as they are being feed. Ah….. another visit by the hummingbird as I type this! Cool!!!

The flowers are popping up nicely. Within a few weeks the perennials meant to attract and feed the hummingbirds and butterflies will be doing their magic. And I’ll have a few roses in bloom about that time.

All this is definitely conducive to writing some good material… and it’s good for my health!

I had a great run today, albeit it a little warm. Now I just have to get out again on my friend’s boat and go fishing for some large mouth bass!

Hope you have a great day! I did!!

Weekly Faith and Health Scripture - A Cheerful Heart Releases Helpful Hormones - Proverbs 17:22

Science Daily reports that researchers of Loma Linda University in California have found that even the anticipation of a positive humorous laughter experience reduces potentially detrimental stress hormones. Bible ReadingIn their work in 2006, the researchers found that the anticipation of “mirthful laughter” had significant effects. Two hormones, beta-endorphins and human growth hormone increased significantly when volunteers anticipated watching a humorous video. There was no such increase among the control group who did not anticipate watching the humor film.

Child LaughingUsing a similar protocol, the current research found that the same anticipation of laughter also reduced the levels of three stress hormones. Cortisol, epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) and dopac were reduced. Chronically released high stress hormone levels can weaken the immune system. A weakened immune system can lead to colds, and a variety of diseases.

Proverbs 17:22 says “A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” As the research indicates, laughter and even the anticipation of laughing can release helpful hormones into our body. Likewise, if our hearts are happy, we’ll likely have a cheerful mind.

God wants us to have a heart and mind that is set on things above and that are positive. The more we love Him and dwell on His loving nature and the wonderful and cheerful circumstances that He orchestrates, the healthier we will be. It’s good medicine!

Have a terrific day!

A Men’s Retreat - “If Jesus Was Your Personal Trainer”

I spent this past weekend together with 11 other men in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina leading a three-day retreat for Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church. It was my first visit to the town of Montreat and the Montreat Conference Center. QHPC Mens Retreat3

It was a huge blessing for me to prepare for and lead the retreat and to experience the rich fellowship with the men. Feedback I received from the men and their pastor was that it was enriching for them as well.

The theme for the retreat was “Jesus as Your Personal Trainer.” You can get an idea of what we addressed by viewing this abbreviated power point. We talked about how Jesus might train us to be physically, spiritually and mentally fit. What seemed to be most helpful to many of the men was learning about how to think with the mind of Christ. This included some discussion about the lies of Satan and the impact that can have on our identity.

I look forward to getting back together with these same men at a men’s breakfast at their church next month as I challenged them to put into action what they learned in the form of a “total fitness exercise prescription.”

Weekly Faith and Health Scripture: Walking in Freedom - Psalm 119:45

We all know the value of walking. Bible ReadingIt’s a great way to exercise as it puts minimal stress on the joints, requires little special equipment other than a good pair of shoes and you can do it virtually anywhere. A regular walking program can help you maintain a healthy weight and manage your stress.

WalkingAs important as regular exercise like walking is for us, our spiritual walk is even more important as 1st Timothy 4:8 tells us Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important for it promises a reward in both this life and the next.

A vital ’spiritual exercise’ is obeying God’s principles… his commandments. In the New Living Translation of Psalm 119, words for commandments, principles, and precepts are found over 150 times in the 176 verses as the author tells us the value of “walking” according to his guidelines. The psalmist speaks to one of those benefits as he writes in Psalm 119:45 “I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments.”

When we live according to His principles we can experience freedom. If we are a follower of Jesus, we understand the importance of living in a way that lines up with God’s commandments. When we are not regularly following His principles, deep in our spirit there is conflict and often guilt. Over time, this guilt can impact on aspects of our health. But when we are living our life “devoted to His commandments” we “walk in freedom.”

Are you walking in the freedom that comes from knowing and obeying God’s principles? It’s a special path that He wants all of us to be on.

Have a great week!
