It’s Friday afternoon as I write this and it’s pouring down rain here in the Carolinas.
Many of you live in the Eastern states so you’ll also experience the rains and winds of the Hermine storm that is moving up the Eastern coast.
I hope that you’ll be safe and wise and that no significant damage occurs to your property.
Build Your House on the Rock
As I look outside and see the rain falling and hear the winds, the following verse came to my mind.
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” ~ Jesus in Matthew 7:24-27
Jesus tells us to not only read and listen to His words and instructions but to obey them. It’s in our obedience that we can withstand the ‘storms’ of our lives and experience His peace, even amidst those storms.
I don’t know about you but the more frequently I read the Bile, the more aware I am of how much I think I know and understand – or ‘hear’ – how God wants me to think, and speak and behave.
It’s in the doing that I mess up!
So, when I am not obedient, when I ‘do not do them,’ my life crashes around me. The stressors of life and the difficult circumstances I experience affect me adversely. Sometimes the ‘fall’ is great. Sometimes the impact of the stressors affect my health.
When this happens, I try to recognize and acknowledge to God my need for His Spirit to live through me in a more powerful way. I try to remember to yield or surrender to Him, once again. I try to remember to acknowledge my trust that His Spirit will in fact be at work in and through me.
Because without the Spirit’s help, I will be unable to ‘do’ what Jesus tells me to do in His Word.
So, as you may experience the rains and winds associated with the Hermine storm, perhaps take time to reflect on what I’ve addressed and see how Matthew 7:24-27 applies to what’s going on in your life now.
And be safe!
