Jesus Holds All Things Together – Laminin, the Cross and Colossians 1:16-17 Weekly Faith and Health Scripture

May 20, 2008 By Dale Fletcher 34 Comments

Colossians 1:16-17 says, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”laminin is the protein molecule, shaped like a cross, that holds our cells together.

Laminin and Jesus

This past weekend the pastor at church mentioned the protein laminin in his sermon. He urged us to go home and read about it. I’ve taken a little time to do that. Here’s what I learned.

Laminin is a cell adhesion molecule. It’s the stuff that holds the membranes of our bodies together. Read about laminin on Wikipedia. A diagram of its’ structure is to the right. Isn’t it something that the shape of the “glue” that holds us together is in the form of a cross? Yes, as Psalm 139:14 says, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. And we do have such an awesome God that is in ALL the details of our life. Such details as shaping the glue that holds us together in the form of a cross.

Jesus on the Cross

Jesus died a horrible death on a cross to set us free from sin and to give us an eternal life. He also died to give us an abundant life here on this earth. As we know him more and more deep in our hearts he can set us free from addictions, pain and all the stuff that keeps us in chains. And He wants to be the ‘glue’ that keeps us together on the inside and makes us a whole person.

Jesus wants to hold us all together like glue. I hope you know Him and have experienced His love. If you have questions about the Christian faith or want to know more about Jesus and His love, I hope you’ll contact me.

I’ve read all the comments regarding Laminin and it resembles the cross. The facts are God knew each of one us no matter what your background is or your faith or your religion. He knew YOU he knew what you were going to be girl or boy or multiples. He knew if their was going to be trouble. He knew everything about your plans for your life.
He watched over you as a child even if you were one of the ones who were hurt by selfish bullies or by bad parenting. He made sure there was a way for you to come through it. Your alive you’ve made it. God has always been there for for you even though you never saw him growing up. Maybe when you and your friends or your friends and their friends got into a horrific car accident and you wonder how they made it through but maybe a couple didn’t. Maybe you were the one who made it. Did you ever stop to think that was God.
Now you’ve become a scientist and a not so sure about the God thing. You say your a Christian but you don’t have a relationship with God (Jesus).
What do you do!! God has two commandments that he requires all Christians to abide by.
    1. Love the Lord with all your Heart and Mind and Soul.
    2. Love your Neighbor as you love the Lord
Salvation is Free you pay nothing for it. There’s no 135 hail Mary’s 5 or 6 times a day
You never go to a priest to ask for forgiveness you just stop and Talk to God like you talk to your best friend.
When your upset God knows tell him he will understand talk to him about it. He will calm your heart. He will give you peace like you’ve never had it before.
So in retrospect all I’m trying to say stop worrying how were made and focus on if you have a relationship with the one True King Jesus Christ. You might call yourself a Christian but do have that relationship and are you out trying to win others to Christ. Christ dosen’t want anyone to perish that’s why he sent out his disciples to be fishers of men and women. That is still true today. Are you a fisherman for Christ.
Just my thoughts on the matter

As Cathi said, we know that we know that we know!!!!!!! I don’t need proof or signs… I can feel the Holy Spirit even as i am typing this comment…. The excitement and joy and love i feel in my heart when i just but think of my Saviour brings tears of joy to my eyes. When one feels His presence and love within you from the moment you open your eyes in the mornings who needs explanations or proof or signs?!! I just know He love me. And he loves all of you…… And Tony, HE LOVES YOU TOO! God bless all of you. Jesus Christ is Lord!!!! Ilze South Africa

Some of my friends are non believers and they always ask for proof of the word of God to the world that we are living in.They did not know that even God created them and leave what they a looking for in them.
This will make them to realise that the answer to their question is for them to study themselves.
    Glory be to God

    To Tony,

I face a lot of unbelievers who ask me for proof and signs. It is very clear in the word of God, Matthew 12:38-39 ….”An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign … and that ….The righteous live by faith… I can stay quoting and never stop. But the issue is this, Don’t wait for a sign to start believing, but start believing and you will see signs! Believe me I experience Jesus personal relationship so truly that all I need next is to see Him. How I wish I can stop my work and just preach Jesus all day long, but I have to work for my family. Just a small thought for you though. Recently scientists have proved that stars emit sound too, not just light. Sound too deep for the human ear to hear. Are we surprised? NO! why? see Job 38:
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much.
    5 Who determined its dimensions
and stretched out the surveying line?
    6 What supports its foundations,
    and who laid its cornerstone
7 as the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?

God Bless all who read this message. I am Maltese, happily married with 3 godsent children

Thank you Jesus for washing me with your Blood.

      RE: Stars emitting sound.

If you can, look up the July 2001 Financial Times article (“THE SOUND OF CREATION”), on how the SOUND of the Big Bang can STILL be detected, after about 13 billion years!

I immediately related that to these verses Psalms
“The Heavens Declare the Glory of God.
Without speech or language, without a sound to be heard, their
voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of
      the world.” -Psalm 19: Verses 3 & 4

    To Tony,

The fact that you are reading this clearly implies that you are in search for questions your heart gives you. Faith is something we hope for… You cannot reason with it.

I pray that you find what your heart is looking for.

    God bless you.

    Dear All,

    I am a Christian and a Scientist.
The laminin structure is really impressive and beautiful.
And I think it is OK to refer to this amazing example from nature in order
to draw parallels between the Christian Cross and this molecular cross
for making points of interpretation more plastic and memorable.
But I definitely would not regard the cross shape of laminin as any sort of a
proof for Christian Truth. As a Christian I do not require a cross-shaped molecule
for being convinced in the truth of what Jesus was teaching us by his life, his words,
    his actions.

Hi Andrew, that was a good thought. You are right, we do not need scientific evidence to prove who Jesus is. I think many of us would agree, because we know and believe that the many witnesses of Christ’s resurrection, reported what they actually had seen and witnessed. We know they were truthful, honest, because many of them ended up dying for what they reported, they were killed. Rather then to denounce what they had seen they let themselves be killed. We know they were true witnesses. So again, in the end of any discussion about who Jesus is and if He created everything and holds everything together, the Resurrection stands as unshakable/undeniable proof. Hebrews 11:3, Psalm 33:6, and Colossians 1:17.

I first heard about Laminin in Catechism. It made me think about many things we take for granted, but especially about abortions. I as a midwife, have always believed in freedom of choice when it came to the subject of abortion. After learning about Laminin, my mind is forever changed. Who gave us the right to undo what God had started… AND DESTROY HIS CROSS IN THE BODIES OF THE UNBORN CREATIONS OF GOD?

How Amazing. I just look at my life and know Jesus is the creator and the one who sustains me – the one who holds all things together. I need to be completely connected to him.

When I walked away from God at a very young age I was angry
for the life he chose for me and that I was living. I could not fathom how he would let me, a child, suffer so much in my alcoholic family. I ran in the opposite direction and he let me. But today, I see his Love and Mercy and how he stays connected to me in spite of my self and the bad choices. He saved me from fatal death. I am so truly grateful. He is the great I Am, the Beginning and the End. He completes me, and so I am a witness to being linked to him even in my worst state. And this is a fact. Thanks for the info. God Bless.

    To Tony:
No, the devil was invented and made by God. He was an angel…he was the most beautiful of them all. Then he became jealous of God and wanted to be God so God casted him down to Earth (which He (God) created). And Zeus is not a god. He (notice the name) the god of greek mythology. The prefix Myth – 1. A traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, esp. one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature. 2. Any invented story, idea, or concept. 3. An imaginary or fictitious thing or person. 4. An unproved or false collective belief that is used to justify a social institution. So there, he is an UNPROVED god. My God is PROVED by the Holy Bible and by the relationship I have with his son, Jesus Christ! Sorry to destroy your thought. But it’s not true.

As a Christian and a person involved in the deep sciences, there can be many contradictions at times and dealing with non-believers makes it only tougher. I like the link between science and faith that has been made in this article. Every great designer leaves his mark :)….

Really Ron? That sounds made-up to me. Please provide some links. Light cannot be “split” from darkness by sound. Darkness is just the absense of light particles called photons. How could sound make something appear out of nothing? I thought only a god could do that.

Also, you really should be praising Zeus because of Laminin. It bears much more resemblance to the Caduceus (the symbol of Iris and Hermes) than it does to a crucifix.

Not to demean you, but you have a faulty understanding of what facts and proof are. Even if scientists magically turned sound (longitudinal waves) into light (transverse waves), it would not prove anything about the validity of something written in a book thousands of years ago.

…And please tell me how Noah got all the animals from other continents to swim across the oceans so they could jump on the ark.

No, I’m not blinded by the devil either, because he also was invented by humans.

God can do all things and although we cannot always understand the mystery of his awesome power I believe in his every word and miracles. He raised Lazarus from the dead so I am sure the animals listened as well to his voice. Many at have been babies.

People read but don’t see the truth. If ALL things are created by FATHER or for FATHER, why did FATHER create or have SIN created? I tell you this. Men are created on the image of our father. Father being a creator men’s we to are creators. In the beginning of creation surely he knew when he created Lucifer. What his purpose would be. If FATHER creates sin then surely he can destroy sin. FATHER foresaw that eventually man would create sin. And if man were to create sin then man would need be destroy. So FATHER creates sin to destroy sin. Therefore saving man from destruction. I say to you ALL men are saved. Jesus never cared what ones sins were. He saved all just for the asking. And some didn’t even ask. He just did it. Romans 14:11. EVERY knee shall bend and EVERY voice shall give praise to the FATHER. Remember our ways are not his ways. For ALL have fallen short of the glory of our FATHER. YES EVEN JESUS. Did he not ask father why he was forsaken while on the cross? Is this not doubt? I think so. Isn’t doubt in FATHER a sin? JUDAS as alike with Lucifer. Must do as Father commands. Praise be to our FATHER the creator in all things. Who has set a plan so ALL will be SAVED. AMEN.

You may say that you don’t mean to be demeaning but you give off the impression of aggressiveness. Some people actually might take offence to this because you are telling everyone that believes in the Christ that we are wrong.

Laminin and splitting the light by sound was all proved by scientist and biologists that have been studying and researching for many years. Your sarcastic remark in the beginning of your comment is very unprofessional and immature.

And yes, you are blinded by the devil because Satan was not created by humans. He was created by God. It says in the Bible that Satan used to be an angle. He reveled against God and became the Devil.

Or you just do not want to believe that God is real.

Don’t you think that it is kinda of ironic that Laminin is shaped as the cross? Also, how it relates to many different versus in the Bible? Plus, the splitting of the darkness and light by sound is also stated in the Bible that God can do so?

In my honest opinion, you sound like you are scared to believe in the Christ.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! This and so much more that I have found as supported by science just strengthens my faith more, and more, and more in my lord Jesus Christ and in my Father and Creator. God is totally awesome. Those who do not believe that there is a God who created all of this – Satan has blinded them or they just do not want to believe. Here are some other facts in Genesis Chapter 1:14-19 – “God divided darkness and light.” In 1980 or 1981 or 1982, the Detroit News or Free Press had an article about the University of Ohio. They did an experiment with sound to see if sound could split darkness into light. Wow! They were successful. They said it (sound )was extremely loud and did split darkness into light proving this scripture is true. I could share more like Noah’s Flood. We have an awesome God. Praise God!
