Drinking My Coffee Without Sugar. What’s Loving Jesus Got to Do With It?

January 2, 2013 By Dale Fletcher 1 Comment

It’s Day 2 in my journey to change the unhealthy habit of using sugar in my coffee. At 11:00 AM, I’ve had a few sips of coffee with Coconut Milk…. no sugar added!

In my blog post of two days ago, Why Drinking My Coffee With Sugar is a Sin, I explained why I believe I’m sinning when I use sugar.

Here’s what’s on my heart and mind today.

Do I love Jesus? Do I truly love him?

These questions are similar to the questions that Jesus asked Simon Peter when he encountered his disciples after his resurrection.

After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”

“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”

“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.   John 21:15-17

I sense Jesus is saying to me, “Do you really love me? If so, take better care for my temple, your body, by not adding sugar to your coffee.”

This perspective gives me great motivation to not use sugar in my coffee as I know that consuming sugar is not good for my body. Because Jesus wants me to take good care of his temple – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – then I want to honor him by changing this unhealthy habit.

I’m not sure that there is a more pure motivation to make a behavior change.

More tomorrow.

I hope my reflections may inspire you to change one of your unhealthy behaviors.

Questions You Might Ask Yourself

What unhealthy habits do I have that are not caring for my body, the temple of the Holy Spirit?

Do I really love Jesus?

Can my deep love for Jesus motivate me to change one of these habits?
