Duke University’s Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health is a great resource for the of you who are interested in the topic of faith and health. During the past year, they have conducted monthly talks on topics relevant to the connection between spirit, mind and body.
I receive an email that announces these talks and wanted to pass along to you the following information about this month’s talk.
October’s Duke University Spirituality & Health Research Seminar
When: October 19, 2021, 12:00 – 1:00 PM Eastern Time
Title: Current Concepts in Sleep & Insomnia
Presenter: Rabbi Bruce D. Forman, Ph.D.
Summary: Healthy sleep refreshes us so we can be alert, as well as promotes good physical health and buffers against diseases. Complaints of poor sleep are second only to complaints of pain. Yet, very little attention is given to sleep medicine in medical education. One study found that less than two hours were devoted to sleep education during four years of medical school. Similarly, psychology graduate programs are similarly devoid of formal courses, except for those students who elect to participate in sleep education where faculty have an interest or skill set. Consequently, there is a dearth of medical, behavioral health, and spiritual care providers who are aware of behavioral sleep medicine concepts. This seminar discusses physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of sleep and strategies to effectively prevent and treat insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder.
Presenter: Bruce D. Forman, Ph.D., received his PhD from Duke University in 1978 and spent some time working in community mental health. He thought it would be fun to work in academia so he completed a research post-doc at the University of Missouri School of Medicine followed by positions in departments of psychiatry and family medicine, as well as on a main campus. He was on the counseling psychology faculty at the University of Miami until entering full-time professional practice.
