July, 2008

I hope that you enjoy a nice 4th of July and that summer is going well for you.

In my most recent blog entry, I've tried to capture and express my appreciation for the freedom that our loving God makes available to us all.  It seems only fitting to write a short entry about this true freedom and independence as we celebrate our country's freedom and independence.

Enjoy the blog post & newsletter!

Jumping for Jesus at the Olympic Trials on July 4th
Adriane Stone

  • Discouraged?
  • Feel like God has abandoned you?
  • Wonder if you can turn your life around after making a mess of it?

          Read on and be encouraged.

"So let me tell you what Goliath I slayed today. I stand before you today, January 12th, 2008 delivered from alcoholism for the past year and 3 months, smoking, pills, obesity, loneliness, depression and it is all because of my Lord and Savior JESUS the Christ! So this blog is for anyone who thinks that God has forgotten about them."

The quote above is taken from a blog started by Adriane Stone, wife of an Army Sergeant stationed in Hawaii, and a finalist in the Olympic Trials Women's High Jump scheduled for 7:30 PM PST on July 4th in Eugene, Oregon.

Her story is about how God can do wonders in a person's life if she turns to God in desperation and humility. In her own words, her blog "documents my comeback to the high jump after 7 years of living a life that was a fast track to the pits of hell."

I hope you'll join me in saying a prayer for her on Friday evening. Read the rest of
my blog post to learn more about Adriane and to visit her site.

  • Lost hope in your weight loss efforts?
  • Lack self control in your eating or are you an emotional eater?
  • Is your willpower to sustain your exercise program waning?

If you struggle with these issues to maintain a healthy weight you're not alone. A 2007 report by the International Food Information Council indicates that 66% of Americans are concerned with their weight and that 56% are actively trying to lose weight.

A Recent Presentation

Poster Presentaion at Annual Conference of the Society for Spirituality, Theology and Health

Dale Phto for Graphics

On June 25th I was fortunate to attend and present a poster at the first international
conference of the Society for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University in Durham, NC.

The theme of the conference was "Spirituality, Health and Human Flourishing: Meaning? Measurement? Implications?"

The leaders of the research in this field were present. In addition to the keynote addresses and plenary sessions, there were approximately 60 poster presentations and 40 papers presented. If you're interested in viewing the major keynote presentations you can check back at the conference site above as there will be videos available.

I presented my work on "A Spiritual Fitness Assessment & 18 Spiritual Exercises for a Healthier Life." The poster can be read at this link.

I left the conference inspired to roll up my sleeves even further to better understand the spirituality/religion and health relationship and to share with others what I learn. Benefits of membership in the society can be found at this link.
